And Time Stood Still Vol. 1, A Pictorial History of Skibbereen and District
We Cannot relive the past, except perhaps in the reverie of reminiscence and in pictures that illustrate former times. A picture speaks a thousand words and in compiling this Photographic Profile of Skibbereen and its wide hinterland, we have endeavoured to traverse all boundries of class and creed to produce this pictorial history through the eye of the camera, which provides a graphic insight into Skibbereen life of a bygone era.
“Cherish the old to understand the new.
Our comprehensive collection of 700 photographs depicts people, their livelihood, their pastimes, their hobbies, their humour, their entertainment, their communal joys, celebrations and sorrows. Since the beginning of the last century Ireland has endured many changes and, needless to say, Skibbereen has witnessed no small number of major modifications in architecture, transport, commerce, etc. and through these exhibits we strive to resent a true reflection of the evolvement of that change. Looking at the town from the early 1900s to the mid 1970s will no doubt evoke fond memories of a way of life that sadly has passed into the realms of history- a way of life that was, perhaps, more relaxed and less demanding.”
The creation of this pictorial history of Skibbereen & District has truly been a co-operative enterprise, and the photographs have been assembled from a large variety of sources.
